• Mikael • meeting

Noah always assumed he would die screaming. He figured that it would likely be in anger or perhaps even begging mercy, not so much blind fear. If someone had told him he wasn't going to make it out the woods he would have laughed, up until a few minutes ago.

Things were fine. Noah had scrimped together enough odd-job money to keep himself fed for at least a few more weeks and he decided to take a walk. He had hoped to find another hideout just in case. One could never have too many places to run to in his opinion. It was a pretty day and the sun was only just starting to sink in the sky so that the light dripping through the leaves was a wonderful golden warmth.

He didn't pay much mind how far he wandered. He never really did when it came to wandering in the woods. Noah stopped mid-step at heavy rustling from a bush just a few yards away. Animals were obviously out this deep in the trees, but this sounded big and Noah watched nervously as a black snout pushed through. There are lots of things to fear when you are a small, un-intimidating fairy. A very large grumpy looking bear would definitely be near the top of that list.

The furry creature stood still as it noticed him, watching Noah and when he slowly shifted a foot to try and step away it roared. The bear charged at him, giant teeth bared and angry growls kicking him into a panic as he bolted through the unfamiliar woods.

"HELP! SOMEONE HELP ME! HELP!" Noah shouted. It didn't deter the beast and he weaved around logs and tree trunks, trying to keep his balance.

A weird situation
Mikael hated nature. Some people could deal with the mud, the weather, the animals, the germs, but Mikael thoroughly disliked the whole concept of it. People were not meant to exist outside in the wide world, facing the brunt of the elements. Why else would people have learned to live in caves, build houses, get furniture? It was all kinds of ridiculous. Still, the witch had lost at rock, paper, scissors with his sister (again) which meant he had to suck it up and face nature in all its horrible glory for a week’s worth of experimentation for their latest research.

Despite it being the summer, it seemed Mikael’s tent had flooded overnight. He had been attacked by midges, his food has been spoiled in the heat and his shoes had been ruined because of the mud. He had another two days left of this and despite being desperate to study the theory of magic in its reaction to known forces in a natural environment Mikael really wanted to pack it all in for a warm bath and a shave.

He had been setting up his next experiment, when a sound caught his attention. Immediately Mikael stood up, looked about and narrowed his eyes. He was deep into the woods, there shouldn’t be anyone this far out. He should know. Reluctantly he took a few steps forward, listening out for more sounds. Suddenly, to the witch’s surprise,a young man appeared around a tree and all but ran into him, knocking Mikael to the floor, but continued running. What the-...?

Then he saw the bear.

Mikael screamed. Probably louder and more high-pitched than he ever would have intended - thank goodness Demetra wasn’t here - which served to only infuriate the bear further. Taking a lead from the other man, Mikael turned about on his heels and ran. ”Why is a bear chasing you?!” he exclaimed, the panic more than evident in his voice. Oh how he despised nature.

• Mikael • hi

He really, really did not understand why this enormous beast decided it was in the mood for a human snack. Noah could hardly hear from the sound go his own crazy breathing and he ran harder than he could really ever recall. Because one tends to only be chased by large bears once a lifetime, if any.

Noah didn't see the man right in his path until it was too late. He couldn't veer around him without falling and he yelped, crashing into him. It didn't slow him down, his feet still scrabbled against the forest floor and he yelled back to the stranger as he tried to evade death.

"RUN!" A very frightened scream, possibly rivaling his own chased Noah and the stranger was up running with him. The bear seemed even angrier now with two prey to chase and he cursed under his breath. "I don't know, but I didn't stop to ask it!."

He snapped at his companion. Really, it was probably rude to fuss at someone he didn't know but this was not the time for questions. There was a large tree coming up just within reach. Noah glanced back at the bear and down at his own already shaking legs before making a decision.

"We need to go up." That was the best warning he could find to offer as he grabbed the man's hand and pulled them both up to the lowest branch. Noah climbed a bit higher, hissing his magic into a barrier between the tree and the bear.

Vines, shrubs, and thorn bushes latticed together, making a hopefully dissuading blockage at the foot of the tree. Noah panted, feeling the drain of magic use without a meal in over a week. He really wished the damn bear would give up because he needed a rest.

A weird situation
It all happened in a bit of a blur. Mikael had been running - for his life in fact - and the next he found himself grabbed by the hand and yanked into the tree. The sarcastic man had - temporarily at least - saved his life, and while Mikael was clinging to the tree trunk the witched look down breathlessly at the bear below, scarcely believing how close he had come to certain death.

He hadn't realised until now that he was shaking and feeling quite exhausted from the sudden burst of energy he had just used. Mikael was not built for speed or stamina, not in the slightest. There was a reason he felt so out of place at the Vaults, especially around the Voss brothers. Mikael just wasn't.... Vidrohan material for the most part. He very much suspected if it hadn't been for Malefecant's influence, he and his sister might have likely been in a very different situation nowadays.

Finally beginning to catch his breath, Mikael looked down at the bear, then at the man, looking confused, what exactly was anyone supposed to say in this kind of situation. "Thank you, I guess." He supposed they weren't at least being eaten by the bear. But the bear itself was still growling and snuffling around the bottom of the tree and didn't look like it was going to move on anytime soon. "Now lets hope we don't die of exposure while out here-" he paused and glanced skywards, squinting at the sun peering through the leaves. "Ten percent of wilderness related deaths are due to exposure..."

• Mikael • sorry I'm slow

Noah frowned down at the still persistent bear below them and sighed. He gripped the branch beneath him with both hands and prepared to wait out the creature, how ever long that managed to take. He looked at his companion slightly more abashed than he had been before and shook his head.

"No. I'm sorry for running past and getting you into this. I didn't think anyone was really out here." He shrugged looking back down at the noise bear. The beast met his eyes and gave a loud unhappy roar. It's almost like it was mad Noah wasn't letting it eat him. That was not a comforting thought.

"I doubt we'll be out here that long." Noah kicked his feet back and forth, trying to ignore that fact that he was now trapped in a tree with a complete stranger. "You seem pretty sure of that statistic." He yawned, despite his best effort not to.

"My name is Noah." He might as well try to get to know this man if they were going to stuck together for a while.

A weird situation
Mikael clasped his hands together, trying his best to remain calm despite the impending doom sniffling around the base of their tree. He swallowed nervously, his already sunlit-deprived skin going yet another shade whiter through sheer fear. Oh how he wondered what Demetra would say to him if she caught him in this state. She would no doubt mock him one way or another, then maybe end up patting the bear and coo at it saying it was nothing more than a 'teddy bear' and then laugh at Mikael stating that he was nothing more than a 'fraidy cat.

Well, at least the only witness here was this 'Noah' person who was every bit as likely to get eaten by the bear as Mikael was. He turned his attention to the other young man and tried to smile despite his unease over the whole situation. "Mikael" he said lightly. He made no attempt to shake the boy's hand. Not least of all because they were stuck in a tree but also simply because Mikael just didn't do that. You could never be certain where people's hands had been.

"I had never wanted to come out here in the first place" he complained with a helpless sigh, shifting on the branch and dubiously looking down at the bear again. "But it was either me or my sister, and as per usual I lost on the deal." He lifted his head and looked over in the distance from where he had run from, his expression worried, "I hope the bear didn't mess up my experiments---" A sudden realisation slipped onto the man's face, his eyes widened and if it was even possible, he went yet another shade whiter. "What if he did?!" he exclaimed, panicked, startling the bear as he rocked on the tree branch, gripping the trunk to keep his balanced, but the panic still remaining, "That means everything will be ruined! I'd have to spend another week out here at least or I won't be able to go back to the lab!"

He shook his head frantically and shuffled about, causing the branch to bounce again while he looked around him, as if in some desperate attempt to find an escape route from their very stuck position. "I need to get down. I need to find my work-!"

• Mikael • nope

The man he'd managed to get stuck up a literal tree with at least seemed tolerable as he didn't immediately yell at him for leading a bear around the woods. Mikael as he called himself seemed to be even more nervous about the creature rumbling in anger below them than Noah. It wasn't everyday you got chased and treed by a giant bear though so he could understand.

The magic he used knotting bushes and branches around the tree seemed to be holding well-enough. Noah was glad for that at least. He wouldn't be able to do much more with the little energy fizzling inside him, insisting he feed. With any luck the beast would tire of not being able to reach them and wander to chow down on some berries. his tree-mate seemed to grow more and more distressed though.

Noah looked at the man as he spoke about some sort of bet and experiments. That must have been important since he started to actually shake on the branch. "Woah, woah calm down just a bit." He attempted to soothe the frazzled Mikael. The bear sensed the growing distress in his captured snack. It slammed both large front paws against the bit of trunk it could reach and rocked the tree slightly.

"He couldn't have. He was behind us the whole time. There was no time for the bear to mess with anything else." Noah wondered what could really be so important to make the man freak out that the thought of it possibly getting wrecked. His talk did not look to be helping as the other continued to jostle about and Noah glanced down at the agitated animal before grabbing his companion by the shoulder. "You need to stop. You're making it worse. I don't want us to fall back down there."

A weird situation
Despite his agitation, Mikael steadily began to settle thanks to Noah's words and the prospect that they might actually fall back down to the ground and the bear might gobble them up. The witch inhaled and placed his hands over his face, sighing loudly in a further attempt to calm himself. "You're right, you're right." he mumbled between his hands, "Demetra would have been fine in this situation" he groaned, "She would have hopped down by now and probably still be laughing at me being stuck up here. She probably would have made friends with the bear. Ughhhh...."

He drew his hands down his face, pulling at his skin for a moment and looking up at the dull sunlight, before he slipped his gaze aside to Noah, suddenly remembering he wasn't exactly up here alone, despite the man's hand firmly gripping his shoulder. "Sorry..." he said eventually, shakily lowering his hands and gripping either side of the branch he was sat upon. "Its been a long and.... stressful project. I really can't afford to lose any research now." Lose it. Get it eaten by bears. He imagined walking back into the lab covered in mess and muck and grime and Demetra asking where the results were, and him saying a bear ate it. The look imaginary-Demetra gave him was enough to make him never want to go through that.

Sighing, Mikael looked back down at the base of the tree again, for the first time really noting the branches and vines over the bottom of the trunk. "Are you a witch?" he asked curiously, turning his attention to the other man curiously. It apparently was not 'the done thing' to just outright ask what someone was, but frankly Mikael was not one for convention, or politeness, or just dealing with societal instructions. "What were you doing all the way out here? You don't look like you have experiments to conduct too."

"I usually have a pretty good sense on how to stay alive." Noah tried to laugh, but it didn't really sound all that funny. Humor really wasn't going to help this situation. He listened to Mikael mutter about someone, a girl, and wondered why this would be amusing. Noah guessed some people were fearless even in situations he considered certain death. "She sounds like an interesting person." He tried, hoping to keep the other calm and distracted.

Mikael seemed quite upset and Noah frowned. "What sort of research are you doing? The woods are a strange place for experiments." Probably not the weirdest. Maybe it was a dangerous thing. He thought that could make sense. One wouldn't want to test something that might explode or otherwise in a small room. That was at least something interesting to talk about. It might be a long day if they managed to stay trapped by this wretched animal.

He blinked, surprised by the straightforwardness of his companion. Noah glanced down at the ground again, then back at his own hands before replying. "No. A kind of fairy, sort of." That was truthfully a good answer.

Noah was aware none of the other fae seemed to see it that way, but for all his differences he was still a fairy. He was much more similar than they seemed to believe but what did it matter what Noah thought. He shook his head at the idea of doing experiments. The only thing Noah experimented with was talking to people and that was case-by-case and usually ended with him avoiding people for a while. "I was just looking around I guess. I got a bit further in than I planned. It was a really nice day."

A weird situation
For all the despair he had, Mikael had to admit, there was a strange amount of comfort in the strange normality of their conversation, despite both he, and the fairy being sat up in a tree for the meanwhile. He shifted his position on the tree branch, peering down warily, skinny legs tucked up and out of the way in an attempt to keep himself feeling marginally safer, despite knowing too well it wasn't going to make any difference. If he survived this, he was certain Demetra was not going to let him live it down. Maybe if he just didn't mention it? No, she would find a way to get it out of him somehow.

"I drew the short straw" he admitted in relation to quite why he was out doing research experiments in the middle of the woods. "We wanted to see the differences working in an urban environment and a rural environment was. I... unfortunately... got the rural environment." He sighed, thinking that really he did not think rural meant bear country but a small part of him was beginning to think Demetra sent him to this particular location on purpose just to give him a hard time. He certainly wouldn't put it past her.

"A kind of fairy?" Mikael repeated, a hint of curiosity more than evident in his voice as he turned his attention to Noah and tilted his head, blue eyes looking over the other boy carefully. He knew there were other fairies about in the world. Rare. But not unheard of. But to find himself stuck up in a tree with one, well, that was rather surprising. "Can't you just fly down or use some of your magic?" he suggested helpfully, though knowing full well that he, as a witch, really should be able to do some of his own. As if he would be able to concentrate hard enough in a situation like this!

• Mikael • tired bby

Strangely enough Noah couldn't say this was his worst day. Given, it was the first time he had been chased up a tree by an angry bear but at least he was relatively safe. His companion had stopped freaking out, for a time at least , and it oddly comforting to not be stuck alone.

"I take it, you aren't a big fan of the outdoors?" Noah questioned with a half-hearteded smile. He couldn't say he was a big fan of it himself with their current predicament. It was usually safer. People tended to be a bigger problem from him than woodland creatures. "Did you figure anything worthwhile out?" He hoped the fiasco didn't ruin the poor man's work.

The question of what he was had caught Noah more off-guard than anything. He didn't feel ashamed of what he was but hiding it had become necessity if he wanted to stay alive. "Yes. Of sorts." He mumbled vaguely. Mikael's interest was unusal. Noah wasn't used to much beyond small talk, let alone ever talking about himself.

Mikael's questions were vaild. Noah could have flown, or maybe even tried putting the bear to sleep if he wasn't so weak. He managed to avoid being caught by only drinking blood when he absolutely had to. Noah reached the absolutely needed marker a few days ago. He didn't think anything out it really, not using his magic enough to worry but now.. "I could probably fly down, and then he would eat me. My magic..is drained. I used what I had to keep him off the tree." Noah admitted glaring down at the still pacing animal. "Feel free to do something if you have any ideas."
