Gage dragged his feet on the way to the market. Instead of working he was on a ridiculous errand. His parents were 'too busy' to go out and pick out groceries so the job fell to Gage. He looked at the list of what they needed and scribbled his own contribution to the bottom without remorse.

The place was already crowded with people. Noisy and irritating. Gage avoided coming to the market during this time of day for this exact reason. His father insisted though. It wasn't like he had any choice in the matter. Gage resolved to take his sweet time shopping, hoping to make his parents just as annoyed as he was at having to do something so tedious.

First thing on the list was bread. The shop didn't seem to be all that busy and Gage took the opportunity to slip in the door. As luck would have it the shop was near empty, because the baker was making more bread. The man told Gage he was more than welcome to wait and he frowned, crossing his arms over his chest. It was quiet inside the shop at least and Gage leaned against the counter, tuning out the baker's off-key singing while he waited.

Hugo was a good dog. When he was sent to fetch, he always did, admittedly with a lot of groveling. Narcissa had sent him for a few things in town, the last of which was at the market. He had just picked up an apple and was about to place it in his basket when he saw him.

Tall, a good half a foot taller than himself, with dark blue eyes and puppy hair. Muscular, with an ass Hugo would kill to get into. He was far beyond the caliber that Hugo usually went for, because he was definitely older and maybe just a touch out of his league. But Hugo wouldn't believe that for a second. Everyone was in his league if he tried hard enough.

He instead raised the apple to his lips, biting into it, and chewing it slowly as he watched the boy's ass contentedly.

"Sir, you cant-" an employee started, before Hugo slapped a handful of coins to his chest, still keeping his eyes trained on the tall boy. He took another bite. "Keep the change," he muttered, walking toward the bakery.

"No bread in the bakery? A modern tragedy of the highest regard," Hugo drawled casually, biting his tart green apple again. He stood beside the taller boy and anxiously awaited his response.

We are young, we are young

The busy crowds hustling though the market seemed content to leave the bakery in mostly peace. Gage watched the clock more than the windows, hoping he would be able to kill enough time waiting here to miss the rush of shoppers. He wasn't going to fight some grumpy old woman over carrots like he'd seen his father do before. If some of the things on the list did not make it home they would just have to come back later in the week.

Gage was not expecting company for his dallying either. A few people popped inside, buying up bagels and muffins from the display shelves but no one lingered. The smell of hot bread in the oven was appealing enough he was surprised more people weren't lined up to get the fresh loaves. He asked the man at the register how much longer it would be for the bread he could see sitting out and found the baker's hand on his shoulder. He laughed, talking about the bread needing to rest or something of similar nonsense.

Busy dusting the flour remnants off his shirt and frowning at the stacks of bread that would not be ready for another 20minutes, Gage didn't notice someone join him in the shop until the boy spoke. He looked over at the newcomer and scoffed.

"Don't talk with food in your mouth." Gage was quick to reply. He didn't let the conversation stop with his abrupt correction of the shorter boy however. "He said it had to rest...What does bread need to rest from? It's not like it does anything. It's ridiculous."

Bad 4 Us

It was the beginning of winter, and Hugo wanted to strip all of the boy's layers off of him. It was, of course, a normal thought process for Hugo. He tended to "undress people with his eyes."

Hugo was an excellent errand boy because he was efficient and always showed up with everything Narcissa asked, no matter what he had to do. If it had to be stolen, he'd leave the money later. If they didn't have it, he'd find somewhere that did. In all things in Hugo's life, when he set his mind to something, an assignment, a list, a conquest, he didn't quit until he achieved it. Hugo was dependable like this.

Hugo had to physically bite his lip to stop from laughing at the boy's first words. They weren't a setback, but they did take him by surprise. Hugo thought he had a read on him, pinning him as the "tall, dark, and handsome" stranger who was sweet and innocent. Oh how wrong he was. It only excited Hugo further to be proven wrong. Hugo tossed the apple perfectly into the nearest trashcan before wiping the tart apple juice from his lip with his tongue.

"My apologies, where are my manners? My name is Hugo Gustav. It's a pleasure." Hugo said, masking obvious sarcasm, and offered his hand.

"It's most likely so it doesn't burn those strong fingers of yours. Ovens tend to be hot, you know. I think I read it somewhere." Hugo joked, wearing a big smile on his face and hoping his joke would fall.

The stranger wasn't dissuaded from his effort at conversation. Gage was slightly glad for a break in the monotonous waiting, even if the break was small talk with this boy. "Gage O'Connor. Charmed." He returned the handshake and offered his own name more out of manners than a desire to do so.

Gage was thrown for a full few seconds as he processed the words strong fingers . He raised his brows at the boy trying to discern if Hugo was just strange or if he was meaning that to be some sort bizarre flirting technique. So far the most impressive thing the other had done was actually manage to throw his apple into a trashcan.

"Yes, they tend to be." He shrugged, not catching the amusement Hugo seemed to wear on his face. Gage wondered if the bread was even worth waiting for at this point, between resting and the conversation.

"Are you trying to be clever or are you naturally this odd?" He asked without a hitch. Gage's parents would be furious if they heard him outright snark someone, even this Hugo boy.

Hugo liked a challenge. He liked to be pushed, and he liked to push others. He liked the thrill of it. He loved a good chase. He was a dog, after all. And not just any dog. a pure Irish terrier, he would like to say, thank you very much.

Wow, the cute boy really was thick, wasn't he? Not a hint of humor in his eyes. That was fine. It was good to know what did and didn't get a rise out of this boy. Hugo would simply have to try everything to make this boy tick. What he wouldn't give to see that happen, Hugo didn't know, but he would find out. "Do I detect sarcasm in your voice, Gage O'Connor?" said Hugo sarcastically, turning to face him full on with a smirk on his face. Snark! Well, there was a start. Yet another attractive quality of the mysterious Gage O'Connor. "And I'd say both, by the way. It keeps me warm at night. And warmth is ever so necessary in this brisk weather, don't you think? You know, I heard tell that body to body warmth is the best way to retain heat. Isn't that just fascinating?" Hugo grinned again and sneakily inched a pace over to Gage.

Gage couldn't help the snort of disbelief as Hugo's words. "I would hope so, but I can try a bit harder if you're slow." He huffed. The baker finally set the fresh bread out but Gage was more caught up in his conversation with the other boy than worrying about that. It was a bit unusual to be flirted with, he would admit. Gage was not expecting the obvious and outright come-ons.

The part that bothered him was that he was a little bit flattered. He frowned to himself at the idiocy of such feelings. If there was flirting, Gage was more often than not the one laying it and never quite as boldly as this boy who he hardly knew. Hugo wasn't done, more surprising than anything. Gage paid the baker, snatching two loaves of bread and laying the coins on the counter before looking at his companion again.

He raised his brows at the other boy, taking the quip about sharing body heat exactly how it was meant. Gage shook his head, looking at the slighter boy in front of him. "You're trying to flirt. " He moved closer, dropping his eyes to Hugo's mouth and moving with intentions. At the last second he shifted just to the side to whisper in the other boy's ear. "It's not working."

Gage stepped around Hugo to reach the door and finish the shopping on his list. He stopped looking the boy over up and down once more then added with a wink, "Cute ass though." Gage checked the time on his watch and milled through the people in the market again.
